Montessori Math (September 30, 2011)

Steven did another session on Montessori Math for people who missed the last session. He demonstrated how numbers don't really exist, don't mean anything, and don't matter. 

Take for example the number 1-

one third + two thirds = three thirds = 1

BUT in decimals

one third = 0.33' (repeating sign) and two thirds = 0.66' 

0.33' + 0.66' = 0.99' 

it isn't one, is it?

スティーブンが、数の講座を見逃した人たちのためにまたセッションをした。

数字が実は存在しないことや、意味をもたないこと、どうでもいいこと等を話してくれる。

例えば１という数字：

１／３　＋　２／３　＝　３／３　＝　１

でも！！少数でやってみると

１／３＝ 0.33'（リピートする記号）２／３＝0.66' 

0.33' + 0.66' = 0.99' 

ね。１じゃないでしょ？

Other interesting things that he mentioned include

- there is never exact 12 o'clock, it doesn't exist

- 1 banana is not the same as 4 bananas

- 4 bananas is not 2 times 2 bananas

他にも面白かったこと：

ー絶対きっかり１２時になることはないということ

ー１本のバナナは４本のバナナと訳が違う

ー４本のバナナは、２本のバナナX２という分けでもない

Teaching White Nights (September 18th, 2011)

Manaty, a participant who is a primary school teacher in Japan decided to teach the concept of White Nights to the children onboard. I joined Steven in their practice lesson to observe and also to help out interpreting. I realized again how important word choice  and the way we explain/describe things and concepts to children.

白夜を教える（２０１１年９月１８日）
参加者で、日本で小学校の先生をしたマナティが、船上の子供たちに白夜の概念を教えることになった。スティーブンがそのレッスンの練習をするということで、私も観察とコミュニケーションのお手伝いをしに行った。そこで再確認したことは、子供たちに物事を教えるときの言葉選びや説明の仕方が本当に大切だと言うこと。

Manaty took us outside, connected the miniature globe to earth by pointing out the ocean and land. She talked about the sun and the shadows it makes. 

Then, she took us to a cabin and with a flashlight, the globe, and a bluetac representing a person, she showed how White Night works.

マナティは私たちを外に連れて行き、海や陸を指差しながら、手に持った地球儀と実際見える「地球」をつなげていった。お日様と、お日様が作る影のお話もしてくれた。
その後、あるキャビンに入ると、地球儀とライトとブルータック（壁に何かつけるとき使う粘土みたいなやつ）を使って、白夜を紹介してくれた。

The experience was so magical yet so authentic, powerful and effective. It was a very nice way to plant a seed for curiosity and learning. 

5 key components to a lesson：

1. catch students' attention

2. provide language related to the concept

3. use materials to show the concept

4. show gratitude towards that concept

5. so what? why is this concept important? 

その体験は、大人の私でも魔法みたいに衝撃的で、でも本当に素直に理解できる効果的なものだった。学習や好奇心の種を植える、本当に素敵な方法。

レッスンに必要な５つの要素：
１．子供の興味を引く
２．概念にまつわる言語を提供する
３．概念を表現するため、マテリアル、ものを使う
４．その概念に対して感謝を示す
５．だから何？なぜその概念は大切なの？
