Children's Smiles in Guatemala グアテマラの子供たちの笑顔

"My last Peace Boat tour of the voyage went to visit a primary school in a slum area outside Guatemala city. Despite the poverty where 720 children learned in a space for 200, the children were like children all over the world- with amazing energy, positivity and smiles.

２００人のスペースに７２０人の子供が学ぶという貧困の中なのに、そこで出会った子供たちは、今まで見たり教えたりした世界中で出会った子供たちと同じ、『子供』だった：すごいエネルギーとポシティブな姿勢と、なによりも、笑顔。

"Among the 230 9-12 year olds, I made a close friend named Katy. With my limited Spanish and her mature patience we got to know about one another quite well. I realized how much I would like to properly learn Spanish so that I could connect and learn about these children better- not just about their family and favourite foods, but about their lives, thoughts, and situations.

"２３０人もの９歳から１２歳の子供の中で、カティという女の子と仲良くなった。私の限られたスペイン語と彼女の大人びた我慢強さで、お互いのことをかなり知ることができた。でもそこで一番感じたのが、もっとちゃんとスペイン語を学びたいと思ったこと。子供たちとつながりたい、もっと知りたい。家族や好きな食べ物のことだけでなく、彼ら彼女たちの人生のこと、生活のこと、考えや状況のことを聞きたかった。
